As much as I love traditional weddings, I love non-traditional weddings even more.  When Christine & Dan retained Sierra & Sky for both wedding flowers and secular officiant services, I was happy to create what they wanted and loved.  They asked me to officiate in costume, so I created a bat hat to wear!

Their restaurant/banquet venue in Nevada City, California, fell through the week of their wedding due to the venue going out of business; they scrambled to find a substitute venue for their intimate wedding with about ten guests. They were able to find this gem with its stained glass windows and special character.

I created a dark, harvest bouquet for the bride, with dark red flowers and foliage, feathers, and touches of steampunk.

As they had a steampunk look and theme going on, I remembered that I had a lot of actual clockworks.  I took out my screwdriver to take things apart for the groom.  He was not expecting this and was very happy with it.

Christine & Dan had set up the incredible stained glass alcove with electric candles and white mini pumpkins.  They asked me to create a large arrangement for the individual table.  I picked out a copper bowl that they could enjoy at their home for many years.

Isn’t this an incredible setting for an elopement or intimate wedding?  They had about ten guests who sat on couches and chairs to watch the secular wedding ceremony, that included handfasting.

That’s Garfield, guarding the steampunk wedding booklet I created for Christine and Dan.  Every wedding couple gets their entire wedding in booklet form as a keepsake from me.

I love the way they look!  Her steampunk dress was from Etsy.

The rental home, which they stayed in for the night, has so many charming details.

Trick or treaters stopped by; and some of their young guests also went trick or treating.  Their guests were dressed up, and they went to a nice dinner in Nevada City after the ceremony, within walking distance.  Nevada City really celebrates holidays in style; it was a busy afternoon with people dressed up in the small historic downtown.

This was definitely a wedding to remember!  When things don’t work out perfectly, think about what you can do to make it work.  I actually preferred their new venue to the one that they lost.  Thank you Christine & Dan for choosing Sierra & Sky at elope2cali.com for your wedding officiant and wedding flowers!  Your elopement / intimate wedding was fun for all of us.

Meet Jessa! El Dorado County Wedding Flowers / Placerville Wedding Planner / Coloma Officiant / Sierra & Sky

Sierra & Sky wedding flowers for Shingle Springs, Placerville, Coloma, Lake Tahoe

Meet Jessa, wedding flower designer and wedding planner for Sierra & Sky.  Jessa grew up in the wedding business, as well as the mobile espresso catering business (long before the new gourmet food trucks!) industry.  Jessa is a senior in college, majoring in Environmental Studies, with classes in communications.

As we have phased out our extra-custom floral designs*, Jessa has become more involved, especially in creating the bouquets for the weddings over the past year.  This photo is from Shelly’s Coloma wedding; Shelly was looking for bright, happy citrus colors, accented with turquoise, and Jessa was happy to design for her special day.  A typical wedding for our team (Jessa & Monique) is to review the wedding couple’s request (colors, styles, flower requests); plan our floral recipes (which flowers; how many stems, which colors, for which items); shop; process the flowers together under our oak trees; and then for design, Jessa now takes the lead on the bouquets, while I (Monique) work on corsages and bouts.  If there are centerpieces, we work on them together.

Jessa started in the floral design business when our business was named A Special Day Designs, and we were strictly flowers (we now offer planning and officiant services, as well).  She started by learning about the proper care and handling of the flowers, and how to process them to get them ready for Monique to design with.  When she got to high school, Jessa had an eye for design and took many art classes, and photography classes.  For her senior prom, Jessa sat in on a private class I was giving to a floral design student on corsages and bouts, and from that class she made herself and her boyfriend very modern flowers to wear.

Last year, we had the honor of being both designers and guests at our friends’ wedding at Edgewood Lake Tahoe.  Lake Tahoe is only an hour and fifteen minutes away from us, but the wedding was held on Labor Day weekend and traffic can be a nightmare.  We chose to camp up  at Lake Tahoe with our flowers and design under the pines.  It was a very busy working weekend for us, for a big wedding, but Jessa did an incredible job with the bouquets.

Jessa also works with wedding planning, making sure we consider all the details and guest comforts and conveniences, and again, her artistic design skills shine through in set-up.  She is a secular, non-religious officiant as well.

An added bonus for our customers is that Jessa is getting a degree in Environmental Studies, and lives a sustainable life.  When you choose us as your wedding providers, we will automatically green your wedding, and if you are having us do the wedding planning for you, we will make green suggestions as well, at no extra charge.

Jessa looks forward to working with you on your wedding, and I hope you look forward to her future posts here!

-Monique
